The Master Degree in "Law of Innovation and Sustainability" is a LLM (LM SC-GIUR) and represents a unique innovative proposal in the reference area. The course, which is part of the highly qualified teaching activities included in the project of Excellence of the Department of Law of the University of Messina, is aimed at graduates in the classes of law, economics and social sciences, who intend to enhance the preparation already acquired in the basic and characterising disciplines of law, through specific IT, economic-managerial skills, and an advanced knowledge of the legal effects that the eco-digital turnaround has on business and public sector activities.
The cultural and professional project of the Master Degree in "Law of Innovation and Sustainability" responds to the need of administrations and companies, also at international level, which require expert personnel in the management of legal services able to manage increasingly dematerialised administrative and business activities, with an innovative approach, ensuring their efficiency and sustainability.
In fact, the course aims to train jurists with high managerial, IT and technological skills, and so able to govern the most innovative profiles of managerial, regulatory and contractual experience in public and private entities and to pursue sustainability objectives in production, commercial and consumption processes, ensuring compliance with rules and quality standards.
The expert jurist in the fields of innovation and sustainability presents a multidisciplinary education, characterised by a strong hybridisation of knowledge and skills, with advanced specialised knowledge in the fields of law, economics and management, and information technology. The relevant knowledge will concern the topics of digitalisation, innovation and sustainability.
The relevant professional figure is the legal expert for innovation and sustainability, who is in high demand in the job market in the current process of ecological and digital transition of public administration and business.
In fact, the teaching pathway was drawn up by taking into account the needs of the occupational offer in the highly qualified legal services sector, on the basis of sector studies and through discussions with organisations representing production, services and the professions, as well as contact with the numerous public and private actors who have shown interest and commitment in supporting the Course, through involvement in specific theoretical and in-company training activities.
Consistent with the objectives of the Degree Class, the Master Degree in "Law of Innovation and Sustainability" is characterised by the interdisciplinary nature of the knowledge, integrating basic legal knowledge with specialised skills that will enable the graduate to deal with legal issues related to new technologies and the achievement of environmental sustainability objectives, with methodological and philosophical-legal framework skills, mastery of the fundamental categories of public and private law, ethical profiles, protection, cultural and social promotion in the era of eco-digital transition.
These skills are enhanced by the IT and business management knowledge required to solve complex issues in different areas of legal services; to organise and coordinate administrative-management processes in an intangible and digitised form; to develop organisational solutions and devise innovative, efficient and effective strategies.
The course, which takes two years in which the student must obtain 120 CFU, includes 11 subjects , relating to fundamental modules in the fields of public law, private law (including civil, administrative and criminal law aspects), legal computer science, and economics, in addition to optional modules that also include the sociology of political, cultural and communication processes.
The first year of the course emphasizes the study of private law, public law, the philosophy of law, and tax law. It invites students to examine the effects of the ecological and digital revolution from a transnational perspective. The student is also introduced to the fundamentals of new technologies (algorithms and coding; machine learning; management of the legal aspects of a digital innovation project) and of innovative and socially responsible management. Competences in the fields of information technology and business economics are guaranteed by the provision of teaching in the INF/01 sector, and teaching in the SECS P/07 and SECS P/08 sectors.
Overall, the modules of the first year ensure an in-depth study of the legal and philosophical categories underlying the main issues relating to the use of new technologies, with a view to sustainability issues, and enable the student to develop advanced skills useful for enhancing the second year, which is divided into two distinct tracks.
The training is complemented by laboratories linked to the various teachings, student-choice training activities, and internships. The innovative teaching approach concerns, in particular, the laboratory activities in which it is further possible for the lecturer to contaminate knowledge and skills (legal, IT, business, communication) and stimulate transversal skills.
'Innovation and Digitalisation' Pathway
The in-depth study of the profiles of Innovation and Digitisation concerns the effects of the digital transformation on the organisation of business and the public administration, with the aim of equipping students with the necessary skills to govern these phenomena in the field of private law, administrative law and criminal law. The specialised training path in the context of innovation applied to legal services has elements of flexibility, since the student may also choose further characterising modules in the subjects of commercial or transport law, opt for an in-depth study of judicial protection in the age of digitalisation, or attend modules in legal computer science, economics, and the sociology of communication processes. The course includes internships at the numerous companies and administrations, of national importance, that support the training project.
Pathway 'Sustainability
The in-depth study of sustainability issues focuses on the relationship between sustainable growth and socio-environmental development, with reference to the areas of civil, criminal and administrative law. The pathway allows the student to further specialise in the areas of agri-food law, social and solidarity economy, environmental and cultural heritage, as well as religious law. The student can enrich his or her training in a flexible manner, directing some of his or her choices towards the teaching of law, IT, economics, communication, political sociology. The course includes internships in the numerous companies and administrations, of national importance, that support the training project.
The Master Degree in "Law of Innovation and Sustainability" aims to train jurists with advanced managerial and technological skills, capable of governing the most innovative profiles of the management experience, in public administration and business, and pursuing objectives of sustainability of production and consumption processes by ensuring compliance with the rules and standards governing the various contexts of administrative or corporate activity.
The graduate will be able to contribute to digital and sustainable innovation processes in the public and private sector, assessing and managing the risk arising from these processes and, above all, identifying regulatory and organisational solutions that minimise this risk.
The legal expert for innovation and sustainability is a jurist able to use his or her acquired knowledge in areas of managerial responsibility that require mastery of new technologies applied to law and knowledge and understanding of the legal effects of the ecological-digital turnaround on the responsibility of companies and public administration.
The cultural profile of the expert jurist for innovation and sustainability is characterised by a markedly multi-disciplinary training, with advanced knowledge in IT, but also in economics and business, enhanced by the possibility of deepening transversal knowledge, such as those inherent to sociology and the communication context, which enriches the specific technical-professional competence in the fields of the ecological and digital transformation in legal relations affecting the business, market and public administration.

Legal Expert for Innovation
The skills acquired will enable graduates to
- perform functions of high responsibility and organisational, management and control tasks, in public and private bodies, including those of the third sector, in independent authorities and in national, EU and international agencies, as well as in state bodies, national, European and international institutions and NGOs;
- perform advisory or management work for companies and corporate groups, including those with a transnational dimension, as a compliance expert, contracting expert, privacy officer, data protection and security officer, including with regard to the negotiated settlement of disputes;
- act as a consultant for access to research and innovation funds and intervene in the management of company crises and emergencies;
- carry out professional activities as an expert in the field of criminal law and civil and administrative liability related to the use of new technologies, as well as in the field of logistics in transport and infrastructure.

Legal expert for sustainability
The skills acquired will enable graduates in this course to
- take on functions of high responsibility and organisational, management and control tasks, in public and private bodies, including those of the third sector, in independent authorities and in national, EU and international agencies, as well as in state bodies, national, European and international institutions and NGOs, operating in areas that require mastery of the legal effects of the ecological/digital turnaround on the responsibility of businesses and public administration;
- carrying out advisory or management activities for companies and corporate groups, including those with a transnational dimension, as an expert in compliance and corporate social responsibility, an expert in contractual matters, a consumer and user relations officer, including conflict resolution and negotiated dispute resolution;
- act as a consultant for access to funds for ecological transition and intervene in the management of company emergencies;
- carry out professional activities as an expert in the field of criminal law and liability of entities, as well as work in the field of the enhancement of cultural heritage, including religious heritage, agricultural and agri-food markets.
Knowledge of economics, business management and communication processes will enable graduates in this course to
- hold positions of responsibility in the design and management of organisational innovations and management tools for the circular economy;
- operate as an external consultant, both domestically and internationally, or create innovative companies in sectors requiring the rewriting of traditional rules to comply with the eco-sustainable turn.
