International Student Mobility

Internationalization of Studies and Student Mobility
Students enrolled in the Degree Programs of the Department of Law, as well as recent graduates, may pursue a pathway dedicated to “International Careers” through a range of educational and training activities, both at the entry stage, during their studies, and after graduation. The opportunity to engage with the international dimension of law is also offered to high school students. Courses with an international, comparative, and European focus are available, some of which are delivered in English.

The Department actively participates in international mobility programs, enhancing study and research experiences abroad, including for the preparation of degree theses. At the final examination, theses written and defended in a foreign language are awarded additional points.

The strengthening of the international and transnational perspective is further supported by the presence of numerous professors and researchers from foreign universities, who carry out teaching and research activities at the Department of Law as visiting professors and visiting researchers.

Erasmus+  is the European Union Programme in the fields of Education, Training, Youth, and Sport. For the period 2021–2027, the Programme expands opportunities to spend time in another country to study, learn, and work.
For students, the following programmes are available, among others:
Erasmus+ Study. The Student Mobility for Study Programme (SMS) aims to strengthen the quality of higher education and training through transnational cooperation among European universities. This programme allows students to undertake a study period abroad lasting from 2 to 12 months in one of the countries participating in the Programme, at a Higher Education Institution that has signed an Inter-Institutional Agreement with the University of Messina.
Each year, the University of Messina publishes a Call for Applications for the allocation of Erasmus+ mobility grants for study in European countries. Students participating in Erasmus+ Study mobility receive financial support from EU funds allocated by the Erasmus+ National Agency, as well as additional contributions provided by the University of Messina.
Erasmus+ Traineeship. The Erasmus+ Programme for Traineeships (Student Mobility for Traineeships – SMP) enables students to carry out internships and training placements, with a minimum duration of 2 months, at companies or training and research centres in one of the European countries participating in the Programme. This initiative is designed to help students acquire specific skills and gain a deeper understanding of the socio-economic culture of the host country, ultimately fostering the mobility of young workers across Europe. The University of Messina ensures the curricular recognition of training activities carried out abroad, or awards extra-curricular credits based on the actual duration of the traineeship abroad, certified through the Traineeship Certificate.

Diplomatic Simulation – NMUN (National Model United Nations)
During their studies, students may enroll in the preparatory course for the simulation, organized annually by the Department and coordinated by Prof. M. Distefano. Within this project, students of the Department have received significant awards and recognitions.

JESSUP Competition
The JESSUP Project (Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition), organized worldwide by ILSA, is a competition consisting of the simulation of a trial before the International Court of Justice of the United Nations. The preparatory course for the simulation, organized by the Department, is coordinated by Prof. M. Distefano.

MUN ROME
Students may participate each year in the diplomatic simulation MUN ROME (Model United Nations – ROME), upon completion of a training course at the University of Messina.
