For the first time since its inception, the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot featured the participation of the University of Messina and its Department of Law.

This is the world's most prestigious legal competition in the field of commercial arbitration: a veritable Olympics that for thirty-three years has brought together the world's top law schools in Vienna. The event hosted approximately 350 university teams from over 70 countries, with 175 arbitration hearings held daily over five days, and a total attendance of 3,000 participants, including students, professors, and lawyers from leading international law firms. In this highly competitive environment, the University of Messina's participation was particularly significant, marking its debut on the prestigious list of competitors.

Before rigorous arbitral tribunals composed of lawyers from international chambers, each team defended its client in a simulated case. The dispute, released last October, concerned the application of the Vienna Convention on the International Sale of Goods (CISG), with a focus on the doctrine of force majeure. This timely and sophisticated case, reflecting the transformations in global commerce, served as a global legal laboratory, offering each team the opportunity to distinguish itself, build professional networks, and elevate its educational experience.

The University of Messina’s Department of Law was represented by a five-member team: Alessio Conti, Valerii Kinareev, Francesco M. Mancuso, Emilia Pace, and Costanza Pizzo. The students, equipped with a thorough knowledge of the subject and fluency in English, were trained and led by their coach, Prof. Dario Latella. Through the Vis Moot, they also had the opportunity to expand their professional networks, establishing connections with some of the most prestigious American and European universities.

The University of Messina's presence in Vienna underscores the institution's commitment to promoting academic excellence and the international scope of its educational and scientific programs. It strengthens the dialogue with leading academic and professional entities in the field of global law.
